Teen Quiz Meeting Minutes August 11, 2007 at Lansing

Teen Quiz meeting notes in Lansing 8/11/2007

Led by Doug Peterson

Planning to the devotional / icebreaker time before each quiz.

Steve Lyle agreed to head up the officials.

Paul Baker will run the Perry Quiz as Doug will be gone.

Registration time of the quiz has moved up.  All district quizzes will begin at 9 am.  Final registration is from 8:15 am to 8:30.  Registration closes at 8:30.  Coaches meeting at 8:30.  8:45 is quizzer opening.  Plan accordingly and plan extra time so quizzes can start on time.  If we wait for teams, we will end up waiting for  a different quiz team each month because time is not important.  Doug will push to start even though you may not have arrived and you may need to forfeit the rounds missed.

Discussion on the difficulty of having the district finals and the top 16 on the same day occurred but due to scheduling conflicts (Spring Breaks – etc), the schedule will remain as is on the Web.

Cost of trophies is being covered by the $5 per quiz charge.

Memory Medals will change a little:

Sept -  Pewter medal  for Gal 1-4

Oct   -  Copper medal for Gal  5-6, Eph 1-2

Nov  -  Bronze medal for  Eph 3-6

Jan  -   Silver medal for  Phillipians 1-4

Feb -    Gold medal for Col 1-4 plus the 1 verse in Philemon

March – Any quizzer who earns all medals for all 90 verses will receive a plaque with their name engraved in it and the list of all 90 verses engraved on the plaque.  Need to qualify at the February quiz and then there is a chance you would receive the plaques at the March district finals (Doug Peterson’s idea)

St Louis Quiz – looking for someone to head up this effort of getting the top 10 to St Louis as Doug and Paul will not be able to do this

GBQ – GBQ this year is at Northern Nazarene Univ in Nampa, Idaho which is 1,947 miles away (27 hour drive).  Hence, the team will be flying to Idaho.  Because the trip costs around $500 each, we will only be able to take 1 team (A-team) – same team that qualifies for ONU.  This quiz is July 2nd – July 5th, 2008.

Doug is working on some banners for display at the registration or at other quizzes.

For most quizzes we will run 6 rooms as we have licenses for 6 computer systems and seats for all 6.  By request of several quizzers, we will have some type of tournament at the end of each day – even if it is a parity round or 2 or 3 rounds of parity rather than a tournament.  Please plan on a longer day because of this request.   Any suggestions regarding brackets can be sent to
Doug or Paul for the end of the day parity / tournament rounds.

Paul Baker will do the scheduling for each quiz.

Registration for each quiz is a MUST.  Doug Peterson’s deadline is 10 pm on the Thursday before the quiz on Saturday.  If you have not registered by then and you show up on Saturday, you may or may not quiz due to the schedule already developed.

Ideally register by EMAIL as Del had the registration on the web http://www.minaz.org/nyi/midistteenquiz and you can email this to Doug Peterson at figtree101@juno.com

If you have to phone in your line-ups or teams, Doug Peterson’s number is 989-666-8157.

Remember the deadline is 10 pm Thursday – please don’t wait – do it by Wednesday instead.

Also found on the form will be a place for COACH’s CELL PHONES – so that you can be reached the day of a quiz on the road if you are running late to a quiz.

Discussion on how an according to question will be read at a quiz for the book of Philemon and this was the result:

According to Philemon verse 17, what …………….  No chapter will be read.

Doug suggested we set up a QUIZ ADVISORY COUNCIL made up of teens who are quizzing to advise Doug on things dealing with quizzing.  Let’s empower the teens to lead this program.  They would meet once a quarter.  They would have a Pres, Vice Pres, and Secretary.  Someone suggested that we email names of quizzers from these different categories to serve on this council:  (2) top varsity quizzers, (2) top Jv quizzers, (2) low varsity quizzers, (2) low Jv quizzers, and (2) 1st year quizzers making a total of 10 on this council.  No decision was made on when to email these to Doug or when and where this council would 1st meet.  Doug may want to give more information at the first quiz and have quizzers who are interested talk to their coaches and then coaches decide if this is a good idea to forward the names on to Doug.  He only wants 10 so not everybody can be on this council.

From Paul Baker:

Power tools is still in development.  Setmaker is done and most should be receiving your packs of books minus the power tools in the next week or so.  They will mail out power tools later.  Email Paul with “bad” questions as they will be working to update the set of questions more often through the year.
