District Office John’s gospel opens with some of the most significant words about God that were ever written: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God . . . the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. [1:1, 14] No other religion makes such a powerful declaration—God, in grace and truth, came to us, out of love, to save us from our sin and to give us eternal life! In Christ God shows us how great is His love for us. Surely, this reminder causes our hearts to rejoice and overflow. It’s Thanksgiving time and Christmas is near! Not only did God come to us in the incarnation to save us, John reminds us later of His intention to be with us in every predicament of life, in every victory, in every sorrow... every moment through the Word indwelling each of us through the Holy Spirit. Is that not amazing? The daily presence of the Word comes as Counselor, He comes to keep us on guard against the devices of the evil one—to protect us from sin. He comes as Truth and to guide us in the way of righteousness. He comes to make our joy complete! He comes to give us peace because He has overcome all things. Because the Word has come to live in us, we can love as God loves for His love dwells in us. Does this not thrill you? Is there a greater Christmas passage than John chapters 1 and 14-17? To help us walk in His way, to grow in our personal relationship with Him and to know and do His will, God gave us the printed Word—the Bible. How precious are the words of life contained in it. As we study devotionally and worshipfully, our lives are enriched and our faith expanded as we grow daily to be more like Him. Paul exhorts us to study diligently this Word that we might be faithful “workmen” who rightly handle the word of truth. [I Timothy 2:15] The Bible is God’s Word, held in our hands, seen with our eyes, heard by our ears and grasped by our minds. Through its study and instruction we are shaped into Christ-likeness—made holy! What a Christmas gift from God! Finally there are other “words” God has given us to better know Him. These are the words written by godly men and women of unusual insight and depth, writers who expose the Word in ways we understand and in the context in which we live. There are many great examples within the holiness world and I urge you to take advantage of publications produced by the Nazarene Publishing House. I especially urge you to subscribe to and read Holiness Today, our denominational periodical. Holiness Today is relevant to our present culture and full of articles of great spiritual depth and helpful insights for holy living. It keeps us connected to our church and informs us of what God is doing through the ministries of the Church of the Nazarene around the world. The articles in Holiness Today will help us grow in our faith and in practical holy living. I know that is important to all of us. Advent is upon us, Christmas day will soon be here. Why don’t you give Holiness Today to a friend or loved one as a Christmas gift? A subscription for one year costs only $10. Talk to your pastor—every church has received a packet of subscription information— or go on line at www.holinesstoday.org. Why not give a gift subscription to those you love; it could have an eternal impact. As we enter this holy-day season, remember the Word—and rejoice! - John Seaman Chapman Memorial—Adam Stevenson has arrived from Princeton, Illinois to assume the role of youth pastor at Chapman Memorial. Lansing South—Kiesha Henry of Linden, Michigan is joining the staff of Lansing South as children’s pastor. Keisha is a recent graduate of Olivet Nazarene University. Owosso 1st—We are glad to welcome Rob Walls as the new worship arts pastor. Rob comes to us as a recent graduate of Trevecca Nazarene University. FORMER DYMT TO NE INDIANA DISTRICT Rev. Nazarene Missions International “From the President” "Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in his wonderful face, And the things of the earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace.”
One of the songs we sang at the NMI District Presidents Gathering in October was the one above. As I sang this beautiful old hymn of the church, I was reminded in a new and fresh way about our focus. It never really has been all about us, our wishes, dreams, wants, etc. It has, however, always been about Him. In today’s world we are becoming more and more aware of the lack of commitment for God, church and the hurting world around us. Sad to say, even in our churches people want what they want or they leave and try another church. We need to come back to the basics if we’re going to move forward for Jesus. We need to start with PRAYER; a deep, longing sense of who God is and how much He loves us, in spite of ourselves. Our prayers should be of praise and adoration for the King. We need to renew our commitment to praying for the lost and dying of the world that don’t know anything about a loving God who wants to spend eternity with them. How can anyone who truly knows the Savior not be changed simply by looking deep into His face? If we truly love Him as we say we do, the words of this song become a testimony rather than just another song. To look into the face of the one who paid the ultimate sacrifice for me should be every disciple’s desire. Once we really focus on Him, nothing else really matters. All this world has to offer only pales in comparison to the Almighty. Any blessings He pours out are because we have been obedient to Him. Please don’t become “comfortable” in your living environment. Remember, this world IS NOT our home. We’re just passing through. Let’s really turn our eyes upon Jesus! — Carol Please continue in prayer for all Work & Witness Projects locally and around the world. The next Michigan District Work & Witness Project will be to Africa Nazarene University, March 10th-24th, 2007. Application DEADLINE is November 15, 2006. The cost of the trip is $3000 with the initial deposit of $2000 due December 1, 2006. If you are interested or know anyone that might be interested in going, please contact Tom Banker immediately at tntbanker@sbcglobal.net or 269/781-7880. Is there an unknown missionary at your church? This missionary often is disguised as one of your children or teens and is just waiting for your encouragement to reveal God’s call in his or her life. JAM and SPAM applications are available from your local Mission Call Coordinator or N.M.I. President with additional information available through the International Church’s website, www.CareerInMission.org. Be sure there are no unknown missionaries on the Michigan District. — James B. Schweigert
