District Office

It’s here!  The first issue of the newly structured district news page has finally arrived.  I’ve asked our office manager, Dawn Stemen, to share some thoughts and give you guidance in addressing the new Michigan District newsletter.

I’m reminded this time of year how God purposely chose change to refresh His creation.  We see a different sunrise every morning and see His mercies, just as fresh and new, each day.  He shows us how He loves change as leaves fall each autumn and are then recreated every spring.  God’s own Son experienced death, then rose to new life -  releasing in us the power to live victoriously — if we’re willing to embrace the beauty of change through Him.

Change is God’s way of keeping excitement and growth in His universe.   I know the Master Creator is bringing newness in our hearts and minds as we let Him control our destiny – yes, even on the Michigan District.  I’m excited about the days of refreshing we have the privilege to experience.

As we have reflected on our past across the district, and have dialoged about how to enter into newness to accomplish God’s work, my prayer has been that the hand of the One who flung the stars into space will continue to hold us steady as new vistas are charted.

We mentioned in the February issue of the Michigan Nazarene that our goal is to provide the same level of district information but in a new and different way.

With that in mind, your pastor/church will be receiving five (5) different news pages every month from the following district ministries:

District Office (DO)

Dawn Stemen

districtoffice@minaz.org

Indian Lake (ILNC)

Ina Strait

programdir@minaz.org

Sunday School (SSM)

John Harris

sschair@minaz.org

Nazarene Missions (NMI)

Mark Baker

nmipubsecretary@minaz.org

Nazarene Youth (NYI)

Matt Hastings

ocnmatt@michonline.net

Each news page will be typeset to fit an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet and formatted to print on front and back. You can access each of the five news pages emailed to you by simply opening each pdf attachment, downloading the news page, saving it if you wish, printing as many copies as you like, reformatting the information however you prefer, and/or forwarding any or all pages to targeted email recipients.

If you have questions regarding any of the new Michigan Nazarene pages, please contact the respective editor listed above.

We want to continue to keep you apprised of all Michigan District news and information, and trust you find it easy to access the newly formatted Michigan Nazarene.

You may want to consider designating a teen who is computer savvy, or an adult in your congregation to take on the ministry of communication.  It could become their responsibility to download each monthly district news page, print copies for display in your foyer, or include one or more of the five news pages each week in your Sunday bulletin.

Thank you for the privilege of practicing the principle of change in this way.  It is exciting to see God at work as He continues to grow Michigan Nazarenes in His image.

I join with you during this holy season in remembering the precious life-giving blood shed just for us, the seeming hopelessness of death and the grave, and the final joyous triumph into new life through the power of the resurrection.

Blessed Easter,

Dawn Stemen

Spring Arbor

Rev. Don (Aileen) Baker announced their resignation to the congregation on Sunday, March 12th.  The Bakers will conclude their ministry in Spring Arbor effective in June.  The Bakers are accepting an assignment with the Mission Corps (formerly NIVS) while continuing as residents in the Spring Arbor area.  May God bless them in their missionary endeavors.

Michigan District Chaplain in Iraq

Rev. David (Paula) Sifferd, Senior Pastor at Lansing Woodview, is being deployed to Iraq in March after completing weeks of training to get ready for his 18 month assignment.  Notes of encouragement may be emailed to Rev. Sifferd at dsiffered@sbcglobal.net or notes may be mailed to his family at 2016 Tulane Drive, Lansing, MI  48912.

District Finance Meetings

The District Advisory Board is in the process of hosting four meetings for delegates from the 2005 district assembly. Their purpose is to explain the rationale for the financial. crisis facing the district and offer a time for questions and answers during the evening sessions. Questions may be addressed to any District Advisory Board member (see District Journal for contact information).

Church Year Ends May 31

Spring is an indication the church year will conclude soon. That means it’s a good time to offer membership classes, take in new members, nominate officers and conduct elections for the 2006-2007 church year. Annual meetings must be held prior to May 31st and end-of-year reports are due by June 9th.

VOLUNTEERS, WE NEED YOU!

Volunteerism is an integral part of the ILNC culture. In God’s economy, sacrificial gifts of personal time and talent are deposited into programs like children and youth camps that change lives for eternity. Every talent, even brief durations of time, make a big difference. So how can you help? There are many ways—let me describe just a few.

How about an ILNC Work & Witness Team? A few days, a whole week-organize a group of fellow Christians to come and help with light maintenance, painting, and clean up. Two teams are already organizing—a Michigan teen group in June, and an Ohio District church group in August. Very reasonable room and board can be provided, some projects could use your financial assistance with materials. Call our office and see how your group can participate.

How about Camp Counselor or Assistant? Every camp needs volunteers like YOU! Our children and youth look for adults (young & mature) to invest in their lives. Do you need special qualifications? Yes. A caring heart, a love for God’s children, and willingness to share your life with another. What a thrill when one of your young friends decides to love and follow Christ! What better way to invest your time this summer?!

Summer Camps can use other volunteers also. Some events during camp need extra hands & eyes) for a few hours. Clean up after meals at the Dining Hall, or after services in the Tabernacle would help tremendously. Aquatic observers are important helpers to our Lifeguard during swim times. Altar workers are a special need. Help during Camp Registration and Checkout is great appreciated.

Reserve a week (or a few days) on your summer calendar, contact our office, and we will get you in touch with the appropriate Camp Director.

There are also many opportunities for volunteers during Family Festival (July 4th), NMI Convention/District Assembly week, and Family Camp Meeting. An hour of your time, along with 20 or 30 others, could quickly tidy up the Tabernacle or Dining Hall. Or quickly empty trash cans one morning, helping us get ready for the day.

Let’s not forget Work Days at ILNC. Our first is scheduled for March 11th.  We plan to clear underbrush and a few trees along the waterfront areas. April 22nd, May 6th, May 13th, May 20th and June 3rd are projected dates for additional Work Days. We will provide more information in future announcements. Perhaps you (and maybe a few friends) could help during the week. Give us a call-let’s see what can be arranged. God has already spoken to several about helping at ILNC. How about you?

Easter Rebirth!

This is a great time of year! The time change happens this weekend, the days are getting warmer, and longer. It is a time when everything seems new and ALIVE again!

Easter is a time of rebirth! We have so many people who attend just that day; we need to make sure we are prepared for them. This can be one of the best days of their lives as they experience a REBIRTH in their lives through the ministry of your church. Are you making intentional plans? Not just for that fantastic day, but what are you doing to follow up on those that come to your church? How are you going to get them into a Sunday school class, or small group? We need to be as intentional about our follow up and assimilation into the life of our church as we are in getting them into the Easter service.

Have a great day in the Lord, and a great time following up on all your new births and prospects!

His for a growing Sunday School!  … John

Sunday School vs Morning Worship

What a nasty title! But you know in many churches around the USA.Canada it is almost like a conflict as to which is more important—SS or MW.

In the month of January 2006, 55.4% of the Michigan District  MW attendance attended SS. Across the USA/Canada that percentage was 68.%.

Why such a disparity? Is it because we don’t emphasize the power of SS? Or could it be that we don’t realize we can count our small groups, and Bible studies that meet at other times than 9:45 a.m. Sunday morning? I am hoping the answer is the latter.

There is no conflict—you know that. Each service serves a vital function in the church. SS needs worship to help bring in people and serve as an entry point. MW needs SS to help assimilate and ground people in the church.

Let’s work to raise that percentage!

We need your figures!

Note:  Easter Sunday Stats are due … Easter Sunday! (April 16)

Don’t forget to report your monthly attendance figures by Tuesday noon after the end of the month.

“Where We Are”

As I write these articles, my hope is that everyone will read them, because they come from my heart and the heart of God.  I wonder if your heart “beats for missions” too.  Or are you too busy to stop and think about others, their needs, their fears and frustrations or their spiritual well being?

We are more than half way through our church year at this point with only a couple of months to raise our WEF.  You might wonder why I’ve put such an emphasis on it.  The days are short for us to tell others about Jesus and get the word out around the world.  We must be doing ALL we can to spread the Word.

In February 2005, we were at 46.06% for WEF.  This year in February we are at 48.60% for WEF.  I say “Praise the Lord!”  We are ahead of last year and climbing.  I’ve watched the report as various churches send in their love gifts for WEF.  I’ve noticed that some have already surpassed what they did last year.  Thank you for your extra efforts!

I know we ALL can reach the goal together.  But it’s going to take ALL of us to make the Michigan District Mission Priority One.  Please remember that what you give, you give for God and the world goal of reaching the lost for Christ.  That is the most important reason to give. Carol

LINKS

How Can I Be Involved?

•               Ask your local NMI president who your LINKS missionaries are.

•               Write your LINKS missionaries and assure them of your prayers, asking for personal requests.

•               Send remembrances for special days like birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Remember, surface mail takes quite a while to arrive in some locations, so plan accordingly.

•               Children and youth find it especially meaningful to become personally acquainted with a missionary or a missionary's child. Encourage young people to send cards, small gifts, pictures, videos, and audiocassettes to your church's LINKS missionaries.

• Check the Unofficial LINKS Lists. Have your LINKS missionaries posted specific needs for their field with which you can help?

• If you wish to send a cash gift, make the check payable to "General Treasurer," note the missionary's name on the check, as well as what it's for (birthday, Christmas, etc.) and send it to Headquarters in Kansas City.   For more information contact Eldon and Kay Kratz at  269-323-0742         or  kratze@chartermi.net

EASTER

The first "Easter Offering" was given by "the church" to Roman guards as a bribe, requiring them to lie about the Resurrection events and to keep the truth suppressed.

Now, the Church of the Nazarene receives an Easter Offering each year to send "Resurrection Hope" around the world.

Please give so others may learn of Jesus' sacrifice. If I could see my world through the eyes of Christ, what would I feel compelled to do for others?

SPECIAL INTEREST

Children’s Choir & Adult Orchestra

This year we will be trying something new for NMI Convention.  We would like to have a children’s choir, made up of kids from across the district, sing a few fun songs right before the Monday night service.  We would also like to do the same kind of thing with a district orchestra.  If you are interested in receiving more information about the children’s choir or orchestra, please contact Steven Merritt at (989) 723-2229, or ocnsteve@michonline.net.
