MULTIPLYING TALENTS
One day during Advent, during my quiet time with God I was reading the devotional guide “Illuminate” produced by the Nazarene Publishing House. As I write this, I’m still drawing from that devotional reading as it takes us through the twelve days of Christmas all the way to Epiphany. The Scripture reading each day did not usually draw from a common birth-of-Jesus passage.
On that day, the reading was Matthew 25:14-30, the “Parable of the Talents.” What a strange passage for Christmas. But its lesson was clear. As we celebrate during this season the memory of Jesus’ first coming as a baby in Bethlehem and the anticipation of this new year, we should have our focus on His coming back in the Second Advent as King. The warning is clear, we must not just sit back in our churches all comfy and relaxed, playing it safe by “burying our talent,” doing little or nothing. No, the Lord’s reminder to us, even in the joyful celebration of this season, is that we be ever diligent. The parable’s message or main point that being ready for the Master’s (Christ) return, demands the kind of committed sacrificial service that produces results.
How is your church doing in producing kingdom results? How’re you doing? May this new year be marked by Nazarenes all across the Michigan District multiplying the talents the Lord has placed in their hands . . . in your hands. May 2012 truly be a
productive year for God on our district!
Yours and His,
Dr. John Seaman
